The Lord's Supper

or

Holy Communion

Holy Communion has its origin in the Passover Meal which celebrates the ancient Hebrews' escape and deliverance by God's hand from bondage to freedom. It is a meal to which Jesus gave new meaning as he shared it with his disciples on the night before his crucifixion. From the earliest of times, believers have experienced Christ as present among them in this holy celebration. Anglicans believe Christ is truly and spiritually present in this meal, not as actual flesh and blood, but in the midst of those who put their saving trust in Him.

Our Statement of Faith (The 39 Articles) helps explain this complex meaning of the Lord’s Supper.

“The Supper of the Lord is not only a sign of the mutual love that Christians ought to have among themselves. Rather, it is a sacrament of our redemption through Christ's death. To those who rightly, worthily, and with faith receive it, the bread which we break is a partaking of the body of Christ, and similarly the cup of blessing is a partaking of the blood of Christ.” (from 1 Cor 10:16)

The body of Christ is given, taken, and eaten in the Supper only in a heavenly and spiritual manner. The means by which the body of Christ is received and eaten in the Supper is by faith.    [Artic le 28]

Everyone who follows Christ as Lord is welcome at the table, because it's not an Anglican table ... it's the Lord's Table. We invite all baptized followers of Jesus, regardless of denomination, to gather around His table as together we retell the central story of our faith and experience His sacrificial love for us. Our people serve their fellow Christians from one cup to remind us that we are attached to Jesus – one Lord, one faith, one baptism. (Ephesians 4:5)

Children are most welcome! Children who are baptized and in the families of believing Christians may come to receive the bread and the cup. Like the children of the Old Covenant who could share in the Passover, they may share in the New Covenant meal. All children may come to receive a blessing prayer. While they may not understand the deep theological meanings (and even we adults fail to grasp them at times!), they can share and feel the blessing of being a part of God's family, who are deeply loved by Jesus Christ.  They can then ask questions and grow in their understanding of the meal's meaning.

Our pastor will come celebrate communion with shut-in and home-bound members when they request this.

"You who are truly repenting of your sins and are reconciled with your neighbors, and intend to lead a new life, following the commands of God and walking in His holy ways,

Draw near by faith, and take this holy sacrament to your comfort and for your strengthening, humbly approaching the Lord's Table."

We warmly invite all baptized followers of Jesus Christ to the Lord's Supper.
